The Charity Register

By: Staff

Your guide to great causes along the Gulfshore.

Troy Frensley watched with pride as a loggerhead sea turtle swam off into the Ten Thousand Islands last summer. The Sanibel hatchling, rescued by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, spent several years in Naples while growing big enough for a safe release.

Now Frensley, the Conservancy’s Education & Discovery Center manager, is one of several caretakers of another baby loggerhead that swims happily in a tank among fish too small to do it harm. This turtle will also educate visitors to the center’s interactive exhibits until it is big enough to swim away.

The Conservancy, in existence for 45 years, has a mission to protect our water, land, wildlife and future, says Barbara J. Wilson, director of marketing and communications. Its campus, built in the early 1980s on a 21-acre site off Goodlette-Frank Road, is about to undergo a major facelift, including new buildings and new technology to enhance its work in four areas: science and research, policy and advocacy, native wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education. Projects include constructing a filter marsh to protect Naples Bay from storm water runoff, and the release of more than half of all animals treated—from small songbirds to big black bears—into the wild.
“The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center was built to treat 500 patients a year,” Frensley says. “We’re currently treating over 2,000. We’ve got turtles in bathtubs, pelicans in bathrooms. Offices have long since been converted to nursery space.”

Protecting quality of life now and for future generations, whether it be as champions of the environment or many other worthy causes, is a common thread among the 307 charitable organizations throughout Collier and Lee counties. The list on the following pages provides the goals of the organizations and offers ways for you to get involved and help improve the lives of your fellow residents—two- and four-legged—along the Gulfshore.
